No Murmer No Return of Awards

The New Indian Express in its edition of 14th Nov 2015 has reported the following news which is showing the social condition in the state, which has not drawn the attention of the human rights activists so far.

A primary school teacher at the municipal elementary school in Ramapurampudur in Namakkal was arrested following a complaint by the parents of the affected boy for her action of ordering seven year old  Dalit boy Sasidharan a class II  student to clean faeces in the class room where another student Md Shariff studying in Class III defecated in the class room.  From the news report, the prevalence of untouchability and discrimination to SC/ST community students by the school administration is in vogue.

In PSU banks  once in a year or two, the central government officials used to visit every branch to assess how the staff belonging to SC/ST communities are being treated by others  in the bank by personally having private conversations with concerned staff members, besides calling some of the customers belonging to these communities and enquire with them whether they are getting fair treatment at the bank.   It is not known what type of inspection the state government is conducting to check or prevent any discrimination to these communities.  Most probably, such a system remains to be introduced in TN.

Hitherto, what role the education department is doing is not known.  This only shows the poor show of the state administration in this area.  The particular case would not have come to light had there been no intervention by a political party and would have been suppressed by the school authorities , who can easily intimidate the gullible poor parents using the support of some local politicians.

Since the party representing the SC has intervened other political parties  who are also champions of social justice have stayed away and allowed the issue to take its own course.

The lady teacher had been arrested by the local police, based on the complaint.  There is no discussion in the TV channels, the self proclaimed intellectuals have not shared the feelings of the affected boy and his parents and came forward to surrender their awards received from the state government.  As is their wont, the two major political parties who speak about social justice every now and then have also turned their attention elsewhere as they kept mum when the issue of Ilavrasan and Gokulraj surfaced. The attitude of other political parties  are in no way different.

What is more disgusting is the attitude of the Teacher’s Union which has moved the Court against the arrest of the teacher Vijayalakshmi who has committed the crime of imposing such a punishment to the boy.  Instead condemning the inhuman attitude of the teacher the union officer bearers have moved the Court only to embolden other teachers in other schools to maintain the same attitude.

Only last year from the southern district there came reports of making the SC/ST students to clean the school lavatories.  For which also there was no action, no punishment to any of those involved.

The media is also silent in such matters fearing sharp reactions from the political parties of the Dravidian denomination. This is the level of  social justice in the state.
