Definition of Riots
What is riot?
As per Oxford English Dictionary, riot means the violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd. Wikipedia say, “A riot is a form of civil disorder characterized often by what is thought of as disorganized groups lashing out in a violent public disturbance against authority, property or people. While individuals may attempt to lead or control a riot, riots are thought to be typically chaotic and exhibit herd behavior, and usually generated by civil unrest. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that riots are not irrational, herd-like behavior, but follow inverted social norms.”
Riot are not just religious violence between the people of two different religions, however, Indian has envisaged the riots between two different castes of a single religion, riot between a political party and a religion, and even the riots of people from different religions against the Government agencies. Basically, the riots can be classified into following categories: –
- Religious Violence
- Communal Violence
- Necessity Violence
When someone took the name of riots in India, the people just thinks about the Hindu-Muslim violence. This is not correct as India has observed violence between non-Muslim religions as well.
